G'day!

I don't see many posts in here for MI lately, so i thought I'd start up a
thread about the newer series of the classic show.

Having been born in 1973, I missed out on the older series (Have seen it
now....) and my introduction to the show was the 88-90 series....which I
LOVED!!!

it was ultra-modern and at the time, a lot of the technology used was
amazing (I'm from an electronics background so it was very interesting to me
also). Seems a lot of the "far-fetched" gadgets used on the show are now
obsolete!! how about that!

I also thought that the cast/crew worked well together with jim to lead the
group as their figurehead.....some very good (and some corny) episodes....

What do you guys/gals think???

I agree, though being born in 1962, I did catch it on the air when it
was on originally a few times.

The thing is that when it was on TVLand a couple of years back, I
found I absolutely loved Steven Hill's character best! It's that
awful?! <g> Here I was at the age of 40 or so when it ran realizing
that although Peter Graves was the man behind MI I'd always known (I
missed out as a kid on the first season), that the better actor for
the role was Steven Hill! Go figure.

But I, too, caught it again in the second series and I liked it very
much though, unlike the original series, the new one felt more
contrived. Did anyone else get that? It's like it was all too
predictible. But that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it. I've always
loved sci-fi shows and this one was on the edge of sci-fi.

Cheers!

No question about it, I agree. I *did* see the show in its original
broadcast, and I never thought the show recovered fully from the loss of
Hill, though it certainly continued to do some great stuff.

The lows on the second series were often lower than ever. But the fact that
they produced a second act that was any good at all almost violates a
fundamental law of Hollywood, and even entertainment-in-general

I think you got it 100% correct. There are a few exceptionally bad, corny,
cheap-looking parts. Those aside, they did an awful lot of right moves.
They held faith with the general intent of the original show, while at the
same time updating a number of elements, such as the general level of
brutality and the more international cast. The two female team members were
just right - tough, super-sexy, smart, and assertive. They even took care
to throw in some emergency or "non-mission" Missions, at least one of which,
I remember, was electrifying.

The second series wasn't as good as the first, it's true, but that's hardly
a surprise. It was, however, a creditable addition, unlike the
nearly-unrelated films.

I agree, too. Though I did like the movies in and of themselves. But
like a lot of the remakes of old series, the trend to turn the main
good guy into a bad guy was a really, really tough pill to swallow!
